Inspiring Artists: The Russians - Ilya Repin

Ilya Yefimovich Repin 24 July 1844 – 29 September 1930 was a Russian realist painter and one of the most renowned Russian artist of the 19th century. He did much to bring Russian art to the West and is famous for his painting of Russian life and events as well as his superb portraits.

I first discovered his work through the book reviewed here by Annie and which illustrates the depth and variety of his work. It is somewhat of a recognition of his contribution to Russian Art that his work was, in the world of art, comparable to that of Leo Tolstoy in literature.
